On May 26, 2010 the Jon J van Rood Centre for Clinical Transfusion Research officially opened. The Centre is a joint collaboration between Sanquin and the Leiden University Medical Centre. This already long standing collaboration is focussed on scientific research and education in the field of blood transfusion medicine. The Centre is involved in training for medical specialists on blood transfusion medicine.

Within the Jon J van Rood Centre, the Department of Clinical Transfusion Medicine of Sanquin Research collaborates closely with the departments of Clinical Epidemiology and Immunohaematology and Blood Bank of Leiden University Medical Centre. Various clinical departments of this university hospital are involved in a number of clinically relevant studies and clinical trials in the field of blood transfusion medicine. The Cord Blood Bank is also part of the Centre.


Professor Jon J. van Rood (84) is a pioneer in the field of transplantation and blood transfusion research, and still very active as a scientist. He founded Eurotransplant - an international organization for organ and tissue transplants - as well as stem cell bank Europdonor. He was part of the team that in 1968 performed the first successful bone marrow transplants in Europe.
