Requesting blood products at the Sanquin blood bank
Ordering at the Sanquin blood bank and delivery of blood products
All required (regular and special) blood products are ordered at the blood bank by the (blood transfusion) laboratory of the hospital. The order occurs either in writing (for example, by fax) or electronically.
Standard blood products are usually deliverable from stock. However, the delivery of blood products that must still undergo typing or further processing after the order (for example, as with exchange transfusions) requires more time.
The Sanquin blood banks deliver the ordered products and on arrival at the hospital (in conformance with the agreement made) are transferred to the hospital blood transfusion laboratory.
Emergency orders or special situations
Blood products can be delivered outside the normal delivery times in unexpected urgent situations. The Sanquin blood bank is accessible 24 hours per day for this purpose.
Emergency telephone
In the case of a national or regional calamity with disruption of telephone service, use can be made of the national telephone network to which, among others, every hospital and every Sanquin blood bank is connected.
Autologous and reserved non-anonymous blood products
Requests for autologous or reserved non-anonymous blood donations and blood products occur according to regionally made agreements. Sanquin´s policy in this regard is recorded in the currently applicable guideline ‘Autologous pre-operative blood donation’ and the guideline ‘Reserved non-anonymous blood donation’.
Information
Information about transfusion of erythrocytes, thrombocytes and fresh frozen plasma, as well as the hereby associated services, can be obtained at the medical consultation service of the regional Sanquin Blood Bank.
Undesirable effects/complications
If undesirable effects or complications related to the blood product occur in a recipient of a blood product, then the Sanquin Blood Blank must be informed of this as rapidly as possible. Blood products from the same donor may still be in stock elsewhere, and these blood products can, through a timely warning to the blood bank, be prevented from being possibly transfused into others.
Transfusion reactions and undesirable effects of transfusions in the Netherlands are registered by the TRIP (Transfusion Reactions in Patients) Foundation. Reports usually occur through the blood transfusion laboratory of the hospital.
You can report complaints or undesirable effects by telephoning the blood transfusion laboratory of the hospital and submitting a form intended for this purpose to the Sanquin Blood Bank on.
